We should take a knife and a fork in our handbag. I have been told that in most restaurants they only have chopsticks.

Here is a blog about Japanese food:

Dear Jenni:
A friend of mine told me that it is illegal to carry any weapon in a handbag in Japan. Here is what he says: 'A knife, even a table knife, or a fork could be used as a weapon in any crime. You can't carry them with you in the street in Japan. You will surely be arrested if found.'
So, we'd better try with chopsticks. It will be a very interesting cultural experience we might share with our students later.
My warmest hug,
Evelyn

Dear girls,
Yes, at the Japanese restaurants they mostly serve chopsticks, but usually they ask how the customer likes.
